Anatomy 9 & Anatomy Minis: Callout for Proposals

A promo image for Anatomy 9 and Minis, featuring a man in Elizabthan garb pushing a buggy with a stuffed monkey in it. We don't know why, either.

Friday 3rd & Sunday 5th October
Summerhall, Edinburgh

ANATOMY is very pleased to announce a very special double bill of events, augmenting our usual regular sparklestorm of performance variety with an ANATOMY matinee (or ANATOMATINÉ) fashioned specially for families with babies and toddlers aged 0-3, kindly  supported by Imaginate.

A contemporary take on the music hall variety show, ANATOMY is a platform for performance artists of all disciplines; beyond scratch, it creates a stage for risk-taking performance and breath-taking theatrics in Edinburgh’s exciting new multi-arts venue, Summerhall, within a historic anatomy lecture theatre.

Now ANATOMY challenges YOU to create startling new work for scrappy dos, tiny toons and animaniacs (young ‘uns, aged 0-3) which can also be enjoyed by their bigger, human relatives. We also like you if you just want to perform for adults and churn the monkey that grinds the wheel that makes the tendons dance. THE BUGGY YEARS will showcase work especially for young audiences, while MONKEY GRIND will show some of the same work in an evening setting alongside work especially for adults.

ANATOMY seeks proposals from theatre practitioners, artists, dancers, music makers and destroyers, puppeteers of junk and flesh, sculptors, story tellers, film makers, clowns, poets, photographers, mimes, installations, painters, weirdos; the abstract, the comical, the terrifying, the sublime, the unfathomable, the beautiful, the life-changing and the oddly mundane.

We are looking for brave pieces, 5-20 minutes in length, that transcend the boundaries of genre: either by smashing, blending or outright ignoring them. We want work that could be suitable for both adults and children (although if you wish to just be considered for one event, that is OK too). We invite you to consider monkeys, bugs, buggys, keys, monks, grinders, grinding, and strange contraptions made of all of the above. You can also ignore this theme if you choose.

The format of ANATOMY MINIS will be developed with selected acts, in order to create a wondrous live-art cabaret experience perfectly suited to lil’ ‘uns.

If ANATOMY is somewhere that you and your art belong, please download this Application Form and return, completed, as a single file, by the stroke of midnight on 31st August, to We can also accept video and audio pitches if this is a more accessible format for you, as long as they cover key information similar to this application form. Please enquire at about this before submitting.

Selected acts will have access to rehearsal space before the show, technical support, a £30 fee and travel expenses. We will also provide accommodation with our artist and production team for visiting acts.

Imaginate are offering mentoring time and welcome applications to their Go & See Fund for performers considering developing work for 0-3s, especially if this is their first foray into buggy-centric live art: for details, contact Fiona Ferguson at, and check the following resources:
