Anatomy 22: DECIMATE
December 13th, 8pm, Summerhall

For our final event of 2019, Anatomy is grinding you up an extra special something! We’ve co-produced new work from two brilliant artists in Scotland, Jian Yi and Sweætshops, for special presentation at Anatomy 22: DECIMATE. As Anatomy grows new limbs and organs, we’re proud to be increasing the support we extend to artist and making new shows happen, so join us!

But not just that, we also have shortform pieces from Niko Wearden and Sasha Callaghan, with tender thoughts and powerful provocations to spin you in new directions. Plus, as always, your organ grinder hosts, Ali Maloney and Harry Josephine Giles.

Magic Theatre – [scenes from the unconscious]
Jian Yi

Combining intermedia digital culture and live art, this dreamlike contemporary performance by wildchild Jian Yi expresses a deeply personal evocation of Queer/East Asian/Diaspora heartbreak…

Jian Yi is a cross-disciplinary performance maker engaging audiences in emotionally raw experiences in the creation of a primal theatre of affect – drawing upon new media digital art culture and inspired by East Asian performance traditions of Butoh and Trance, this new work seeks to find the contemporary connections made available between technology, dancing body and schizo-mind.

We Eagerly Await Your Complete Submission

Do you have X? That certain something? Have you been biding your time? Do you just want to be up there? You know you do. You have always known. We have always known and in all ways known. Your dreams. Your deepest desires. Your moment. We are here to take you there on the next step.

Sweætshops® is a “multipersonality conglomerate” and degenerate artist, their work creates intense ritual and allegory out of the waste of 21st century capitalism using sound, performance and video. We Eagerly Await Your Complete Submission explores reality TV show suicides, the rhetoric of religious cults, depersonalisation, atomism and ego death.

Piss on Pity Manifesto
Sasha Saben Callaghan

We are the sum of the stories we tell ourselves. Often, we know they aren’t really true but we hang onto them for comfort. One of these stories is that charity must be a force for good and philanthropy is always admirable. It seems downright rude to challenge this generosity but the ‘Piss on Pity’ manifesto has got no time for manners.

These are the words of angry disabled people telling it ‘like it is’ when it comes to inspiration porn and being ‘vulnerable’. Nasty, ungrateful and funny, PoP is a helpful guide to resistance and revenge.

To My Selkie Friend
Niko Wearden

Niko Wearden performs a work-in-progress extract of To My Selkie Friend, a performance research project formed out of a series of emails written to soft friends whilst they were working with a colony of harbour seals on the Isle of Skye. The sea – and Skye – bodies and gender; things in motion, states of becoming. The trouble of masculine transition on northern landscapes and the power swimming in the sea to move – move with and amongst – a fluid body.
