ANATOMY #17 and ANATOMINIS #4: SAM SATYR’S BREAKING NEWS ACTION PLAYSET
Call for Proposals: Deadline 31st January
Events on Friday 16 March 2018, 7pm (ages 17+) & Sunday 18 March 2018, 11am (ages 0–5), Summerhall, Edinburgh
ANATOMY brings back our mega carnival cyclone double bill: our regular 17+ performance variety and an ANATOMY matinee for kids aged 0-5s and their friends of all ages. How do you break the news to a toddler? How can a toddler teach you to break the news into tiny pieces? How can you play the best game of putting it back together in strange new ways?
The satyrs are braying. Half human and half goat, they sip the headlines from staticky televisions and pour their newswine up into phones and tablets. Each comic belch and teasing tail-swish reverberates across the world. Have you marked yourself safe yet? They build towering emoji monoliths to which we flock, hungry for the truth. Resistance arises, of course: ‘Which 60s revolutionary hero are you?’ You might have fifteen unread notifications right now: you’d better check.
Funded by Creative Scotland and supported by Imaginate!, ANATOMY is a quarterly live art cabaret based in Edinburgh’s Summerhall and occasionally venturing elsewhere. We are looking for fearless proposals, 5-30 minutes in length, of things that can be presented in a room with an audience, regardless of trend, style, medium or network. We seek iconoclasts, film-warpers, grotesques, thumpers of technology, immersive weepers, levitating playwrights, jugglers of industrial salvage, puppet dancers and throat gymnasts.
For our March double bill, we are seeking tales of children as news reporters, news reporters as children, platoons of automated youtube videos rising up en masse, My First Clickbait Factory, reality as a ticketed event – and tools for the brave young to smash up the news and start again. But if you have a better idea then ignore ours: strict thematic adherence is not essential. (There is, however, a complete ban on all proposals in any way related to D***** T****)
We love proposals that could be suitable for both adults and children. We challenge you to entertain all ages! (If you need advice on making early years performance, get in touch.) But if you only want to perform in one show, that’s OK too.
ANATOMY is especially welcoming of artists who face marginalisation, including D/deaf and/or disabled people, LGBTI+ people, women, people of colour, working class people, and people from any related background or identity. We have a full accessibility policy to support this work. If you feel you are often excluded from performance opportunities, we would like to include you and hear how we can do that better. We have a budget to help meet individual access needs.
Selected acts will receive:
– A £100 fee per performer per performance, plus travel expenses
– Accommodation if needed with Anatomy family and friends
– Rehearsal space in Summerhall as required
– Full technical support for the show
– Professional photo and film documentation of the performance
We are currently unable to host aerial performances. One day we will be able to fly.

To apply, please download an application form and a voluntary diversity monitoring form and return, completed, to firstname.lastname@example.org by 23:59pm of 31st January 2018. We welcome proposals in alternative formats if this is better for you; please contact us for details.
